Some books have the power to change the course of your life and thinking, and this was one of those for me. Washington was a complex, complicated, and deeply flawed man... a human being, just like the rest of us. But for some reason, God used him greatly. Reading through Washington's life became a spiritual journey for me. It challenged my views of suffering, perseverance, friendship, marriage, and patriotism. It revealed my weakness or apathy towards these things. And it made me want to change. The author took a very measured and secular approach to telling Washington's life, but there was no denying God's hand on him or our country. God cares and He's working on something, even in the midst of unspeakable suffering and loss. Suffering that we just can't and don't understand in our culture today. I couldn't recommend this book more highly!

This book is a fascinating look into Ronald Reagan's life from his own perspective.  "The Soviet Union we faced during my first Winter in office was guided by a policy of immoral and unbridled expansionism," he wrote of 1981.  It seems that history is repeating itself - except we don't have the good fortune to have Reagan as president.  The truth is, there is evil all over the world, and when we start to put our heads in the sand, pretending that it doesn't exist, the most vulnerable suffer.  And then when the most vulnerable are gone, the more powerful will begin to suffer too.  That's us.

I love this ESV Study Journaling Bible because it provides verse by verse context and commentary (along with insightful visuals) as well as space to make notes.  I love going back and reading my comments from a certain time and to see what God has done in my life since then.  I also love order so having a special spot to write rather than scribbling around and underlining the actual text is perfect for me and my desire to keep my Bible "nice".
