Christian, unhitch your wagon and come back to Jesus.
Over the past eight years, I have come to view Donald Trump as an Anti-Christ. Not necessarily the Anti-Christ, but an Anti-Christ. 1 John 2 tells us, "Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come... Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ." An antichrist is literally against-Christ, opposed to God, an opposite and enemy of God.
I want to demonstrate to you how Trump is an antichrist because I believe embracing an antichrist is eternally dangerous to the souls of people who call themselves Christians. Trump and his isolationist Christian Nationalism have infiltrated church communities and drawn worship away from God and placed it on the man himself. Trump has mingled his personality with the Christian faith and this has confused and deceived millions. Jesus told us in Matthew 10 "I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves". If you identify yourself as a Christian, your devotion must always be to the Lord Jesus. Because of this, we must name and counter evil, speak truth in the midst of lies, and be discerning of those who would have influence over our minds, hearts, and actions.
On the evening of January 6th, 2021, after watching the events of the Capitol Riot, I wrote the following on my Facebook page:
"These past two months since our election have been eye-opening and deeply discouraging to me. When I saw the images from the Capitol building today, at first I thought I was seeing photos from Beirut or Bengazi. The violence and sedition must end. The hangman's gallows and Confederate flags - this is not who we are - and we should have no part in it.
Providentially, my devotion this morning was Psalm 1:1-6:
"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither - whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction."
God tells us not to walk in step with the wicked or to stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers. For reasons that I cannot comprehend, many professing Christians have enthusiastically hitched their wagon to Trump, a man who has proven himself to be wicked and a mocker. He and many Republican lawmakers have stood in the way that sinners take, today especially, spreading lies and inciting violence.
Over the past 5 years, Donald Trump has knowingly lied, deceived, mocked, slandered, and threatened. He has assaulted and committed adultery, multiple times throughout his life. He has spread fear and paranoia with unending conspiracy theories. He is devoid of the Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Trump seems like a man whom Satan has had his way with.
If you identify yourself as a Christian, do not allow yourself to be deceived by a man of lawlessness, a son of destruction. I beg you - unhitch your wagon. Cry out to God for justice and healing in our land. It is He who is in control.”
I wrote these words over 3 years ago and Donald Trump has only become more emboldened in his sin. Although he picks up a Bible for photo opportunities, he does not know what it says or Who it is about. Trump says the name of Christ to pander and mislead, but he does not believe that he needs Christ or His deliverance. In fact, Trump wants us to believe that He is a different form of Christ, sent to us by God to "save our Country". This is true heresy and was foretold to us by apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:
"For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough... Such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve."
In the presidential election of 2020, exit polls recorded that 85% of self-professing white evangelical Christians voted for Donald Trump. I know there are a myriad of reasons for why people did this. "I love the guy!" "He was the lesser of two evils." "I held my nose and voted." "I don't like the man but I like his policies." These reasons are no longer valid, it seems to me. The 2024 primary process and third-party alternatives grant us the opportunity to raise our voices and select a different candidate that has not demonstrated such dangerous levels of pride, self-centeredness, ignorance, and blatant disregard for the truth and the laws of the United States.
Donald Trump is like Satan, "the Father of lies". He is the opposite of Jesus whose name is "Faithful and True". When Trump speaks publicly, 76% of what comes out of his mouth is "blatantly untrue, untrue, or mostly untrue". To embrace a man like this is to condone and wink at his behavior - and I believe God sees and cares deeply about all of it. In John's letter to the 7 Churches of Revelation, he gravely warned them against moral compromise, devotion to false teachers, and demonstrating lukewarm faith.
If you are a professing Christian, please do not be deceived. Trump has shown us who he is - an Antichrist. His influence leads to hate, violence, broken relationships, sexual immorality, and ultimately, eternal death and separation from God. Instead, turn towards the one true source of hope and giver of abundant life, Jesus Christ - it is He who is in complete control over our Country and our world. Pray for our leaders and future leaders, that they would be wise lovers of peace and truth and that we would be people filled with godly character and the love of Jesus to bless our families and communities.
